Maybe you could log 'last direction pressed' (i.e., direction being faced) and light squares ONLY in that direction, making it more like a torch than a lantern; like this:
######### #.......# ##.....## ###...### ###.@.### ###...### ######### making them less useful than lamps and lanterns? [hmm... ok, the posts strips spaces and isn't monospace; so, #=dark and you'll have to copy/paste into a monospace text-editor. although that kinda looks a bit like facing diagonally][Quote]

dwarvish iron helms are way too common in nethack. this would make lamps and lanterns obselete for the most part (except for magic lamp wishes). Not a good idea unless you make dwarf helmets a lot rarer, imo[Quote]

/* MRKR: Dwarves in dark mines have their lamps on. */
Looks like someone put that in. On another topic, should the item's name or description be changed to reflect its new capability? Otherwise there doesn't seem to be much to let the player know that it can be used this way, aside from the fact that it shows up in the 'apply' menu...[Quote]

A neat little patch. It'd be cute if the lamps were on when worn by dwarves so someone could see them coming or at least spot little flashes of light in the distance as dwarves toil in the Gnomish Mines.[Quote] |
