Description | Brewing potions using juice and molds |
Dipping different kind of mold corpses in fruit juice will start a fermentation process. Give it a while to ferment, and you have a new potion -- booze, healing, and others.
Added patch from my harddrive (I downloaded it before) because I noticed that all http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~malcolmr give 403 errors. This patch is really cool, would be good for a Scientist role starting EQ fruit juice. Unfortunately dipping one corpse into multiple potions of fruit juice yields multiple potions of whatever brews, and there is no "brewing failed, you dump out the failed attempt" leaving you with an empty bottle. Also I got this to work (8 years ago) with slashem (in my variant) but I can't remember how. I am sure people with more coding experience than me (which is EVERYONE) would read the compile errors and do what I did to get it to work

I noticed that there is NO link here anymore, I found it in my downloaded patches folder.
This patch WILL unfortunately allow 6 stacked fruit juice potions to change into 6 healing potions with 1 green mold. I'd like to figure out how to fix that. I would also like to figure out how to force brewing to occasionally fail (and with nethackTNG's code) create empty bottles: "the fermentation didn't take and you dump out the sludge" (item enters inventory) a)empty bottle. also I can't remember HOW I got it to work in slashem (it was a long time ago when I added it) so it works in nethack, hand coding it into slashem requires a bit of a tweak.[Quote]

As I said before the abuse would be in that one mold (green mold) and stackable 6 potions would create 6 potions of healing. It would be nice to get rid of that ability to exploit. Also maybe some "oops" the fermentation did not take, (with the next generation patch) could result in empty bottles[Quote]

Repeated comment. Alchemy is an algebra. You have any number of possible algebras, none seems _natural_, an alchemy engine would be desirable.[Quote]

added this to slashem and after some minor tweaks it works, and I'm adding some of the slashem monsters into it to add potions. I feel that if you keep the potions simple (ie no polymorph potions gain level potions etc can be brewed) the game is still pretty balanced. Although one major problem/abuse is possible and I can't figure out how to stop it.
That is: say you have 6 potions of fruit juice and one green mold corpse if you dip 1 corpse into (a) potion, it affects all potions so you end up with 6 potions of healing.[Quote]

Interesting, but can it be abused? molds are common and alchemy needs to have risks along with rewards.[Quote]

I *REALLY* like this idea! I'm a botanist/ethnobotanist, and would love to help develop this idea! I think all comestibles could be folded into this idea as well: fortune cookies are basically grains, while lembas wafers have that good ol' Elfin magick to them and could spawn a wider variety of beneficial potions beyond just booze. Dipping copper rings spawns absinthe-like (due to the color green...clairvoyance?) potions, uranium wands can foment (haha..a wordplay on "ferment") disintegration resistance potions (sorry, that'd be a new object), and maybe even dipping a cockatrice corpse in a potion of acid could yield a potion of cement, to be used to immobilize opponents!
I realize this is a very old post, but if you or anyone is interested in more ideas for this series of patches (I'm not a programmer) contact me at hypocotyl@gmail.com.[Quote] |
